About Ariike
My mum wore stilettos, beehive wigs and mini iro and buba.
I came of age in jeans and jeans jacket and wide Oxford pants
and danshiki. Black Power! At the time of the blaring horns of Fela Kuti and his handmade Fela suit, James Brown and Monomono. We had our clothes custom made. Patchwork is the rage! My grandmother on the other hand was known for her elaborate headgear and had a nickname to boot.
My father could dance the twist
These were my influences. Traditional, classic, modern but at all times style.
My love affair with dressmaking started with my mother, a dressmaker and my grandmother a textile trader. I learnt to sew with my mother and made my first full garment at 9 years old. Instead of fashion, I went into Law and practiced for over 20 years in the UK. The longing for a career in fashion was always present. I did a short course in a Fashion College in London and continued my interest privately. But after battling 2 cancers, I realised I could no longer wait. I made a pivotal career change and starter my fashion career in 2019.
